Legend from the Middle Ages has it that the Jordanne River which passes through Aurillac was once filled with gold flakes which were exchanged for copper, as reported by religious pilgrims returning from St. Jacques de Compostela in Spain. Thus were born traditions in Aurillac of coppersmithing and copperware. From this history came the copper parts used in the manufacture of umbrellas: nuts, slides, epaulettes. At the same time, the forests of the Cantal region of Auvergne were thick, giving rise to an industry supplying masts and wooden handles. Finally, Cantal farmers selling their horses in Spain brought back cotton fabric – first used in the manufacture of blankets – from their travels. With all the pieces of the puzzle in place, it was natural for Aurillac to become the cradle of the French umbrella.
"The Aurillac" label, born in 1998, ports a nugget of gold as its logo, conveying an image of French quality and time-honored craftsmanship. In the intervening years, the Aurillac name has quickly become a bold fashion statement whose reputation has spread quickly within France and around the world.
